What is an AI skill, and why should a ten-year-old build one?

A skill is a job written down once - the steps, the format, the checks - and called by name ever after. Here is what that actually means, in language a ten-year-old and their parent can both use.

A ten-year-old in one of our Level 5 sessions had, without any prompting from us, written out the exact same six-step method for making a poster three separate times that month - once for a book report, once for a science fair board, once for a birthday invitation. Each time he retyped the steps from memory, slightly differently, into a fresh chat. We asked him why he didn't just save it. He looked at us like we had suggested something illegal.

He hadn't saved it because nobody had told him he was allowed to. That permission - to write a method down once and call it by name forever after - is what an AI skill actually is.

What is an AI skill?

A skill is a procedure, written down once: when to use it, the steps in order, the shape the output should take, and the checks that must pass before it counts as done. Instead of describing the whole job again every time, a child just says "run poster-maker" and the steps are already there, waiting.

  • When to use it - "whenever I need a poster for school."
  • The steps - title, three main points, one image idea, one source line.
  • The shape - a short bullet list, not a paragraph.
  • The checks - does it have exactly three main points? Is there a source line?

Why a ten-year-old, specifically

Adults tend to assume this is an advanced idea. It is not. A ten-year-old already has repeatable methods in their head - how they pack a school bag, how they structure a book report, how they plan a birthday party. Writing one of those down as a skill does not require any technical skill at all. It requires noticing that you do the same thing more than once.

The steps in your head are worth more written down than they are re-invented every time.

What changes once a skill exists

The difference is not really speed, although it is faster. It is consistency. A method that lives only in memory drifts a little each time it is used - a step gets skipped under time pressure, a check gets forgotten. A method written down as a skill does not drift. Run it in January or June and it does the same six steps either way.

One honest limit: a skill only stays useful if it gets updated when the real method changes. A skill nobody revises for a year quietly turns into bad advice with good formatting.
