Most kids learn one level of AI. We teach ten.
A building can only go as high as its foundation goes deep. Almost every child meets AI as a text box and stops there - a ground-floor understanding. This is the rest of the ladder: ten levels, fifty things to try at home, and a panel on the left that grows a new control every time you reach one.
Depth decides height
Both buildings below are drawn to the same scale. The difference is not talent and it is not age - it is how many levels of foundation somebody bothered to dig before they started building upwards.
Meets AI as a text box and stops there. One level of foundation holds up one storey - useful on its own, but there is nothing underneath to build on.

One question, one answer
This is where almost everyone stops. A box, a question, an answer. It knows language - it does not know your child, their class, their notes or their rules. Close the tab and everything is gone.
No memory of them. No access to their notes. Close the tab and it is gone - which is exactly what the next nine levels fix.

You think of an animal. The AI has to guess it in twenty yes-or-no questions.

Stop starting from a blank box
The gap between a boring answer and a brilliant one is almost never the AI. It is the question. A prompt with a role, a job, a length and an audience gets a different class of answer - and once a child writes a good one, they own it forever.

Teach it a job you keep repeating
A skill is a procedure written down once - when to use it, the steps, the shape of the output, the checks that must pass - and then called by name. This is the level where a child stops chatting with a tool and starts building one.

Reach into the tools you already use
Reading a file you uploaded was step one. A connector lets it read a live source - a calendar, a folder, a mailbox - with permission you granted and can take back. This is also the first level where the honest lesson is about saying no.
Read-only unless a parent says otherwise, and every one of these is a switch a child can turn off. Every call it makes shows up in the decision log at level 9.

What is the AI Intermediate Learning Pathway?
It is a ten-level framework Technology Garage uses to teach AI to children, running from asking a question (level 1) through prompt engineering, context, retrieval, skills, connectors, agents, building products, guardrails and finally the economics of running AI (level 10). Each level adds a capability that only works because the level below it is already solid.
What are the ten levels, in order?
1. Question and answer. 2. Prompt engineering. 3. Context engineering. 4. RAG, or retrieval-augmented generation. 5. Skills. 6. Connectors. 7. Agents. 8. Ideation and building custom products. 9. Governance and guardrails. 10. Tokenomics, meaning cost control and management.
Why does a child need ten levels when most people only use one?
Because depth of foundation decides height of building. A child who only knows how to type a question into a text box has a one-storey understanding - genuinely useful, but nothing can be built on top of it. Each level below the surface supports many more levels above it, which is why the same child can later design an agent or scope a product without it feeling like a leap.
What age is this pathway for?
The pathway is written for children who can already read and write independently, roughly age nine upwards. The activities on each level are deliberately low-tech - paper, index cards, a kitchen table - so a younger child can do the thinking parts with a parent and pick up the tool parts later.
Do children need their own AI account to follow this?
No. Around half the activities on this page need no computer at all, and the rest can be done on a shared family account with a parent sitting alongside. Levels 6 and 9 in particular are designed to be done with a grown-up, because they are about granting and revoking access.
How is this different from a coding class?
A coding class teaches a language. This teaches the scaffolding around a model - context, retrieval, skills, permissions, guardrails and cost - which is what actually separates someone who gets useful work out of AI from someone who gets a paragraph out of a chatbot. Very little of it is typing code, and none of it goes stale when the next model ships.
