Who is responsible when the AI gets it wrong?

An AI put a wrong fact in a child's homework and the child handed it in anyway. Here is why the answer to whose fault that is matters more than almost anything else on this list.

A student handed in a science project with a wrong fact in it - a date an AI had confidently invented and he had not checked. His teacher marked it down. In the debrief afterward, he argued, genuinely and not unreasonably to his eleven-year-old mind, that the AI should get the blame, since it was the one that produced the wrong sentence. We asked the rest of the group to debate it for five minutes. It took them about two to reach the answer that matters most in this entire pathway.

Responsibility does not transfer to a tool. Ever. He had handed in the work under his own name, and that decision - not the AI's mistake - was the one that actually counted.

Who is responsible for AI mistakes?

The person who used the output and passed it along as their own is responsible for checking it first. This is true whether the tool is an AI, a calculator, a spellchecker, or a friend who offered to help - using a tool does not transfer accountability for the result to the tool itself.

Why this feels unfair to a child, at first

It genuinely does feel unfair for a moment - the AI wrote the wrong sentence, not the student. But the same standard already applies everywhere else in a child's life without anyone questioning it: a calculator that's used wrong still leaves the arithmetic mistake with the person who read the wrong number off the screen and wrote it down. AI is not a special exception to a rule children already live by constantly.

The AI was wrong. Handing it in without checking was the actual decision - and that decision was his.

What this teaches, beyond the one project

Once a child accepts that responsibility stays with the person, the checking habits from earlier levels - demanding a source, running a checklist, verifying instead of trusting - stop feeling like extra homework and start feeling like the actual point. Nobody checks carefully for a mistake they've already decided isn't their problem.

One honest limit: this principle does not mean every mistake is equally the child's fault regardless of circumstances - a family that never taught checking habits at all bears some responsibility for that gap too. What it does mean is that inside a chat, at the point of deciding whether to trust an answer, the responsibility for that specific decision sits with the person who made it, not the tool that offered it. That closes out guardrails; the final level, tokenomics, is about the cost behind every one of those answers - which, as it turns out, is its own kind of responsibility.
